Michelle Hodkin’s Mara Dyer trilogy consists of The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer, The Evolution of Mara Dyer, and The Retribution of Mara Dyer. The series follows Mara, the only survivor of a tragic accident, who learns that she has a disturbing ability to kill people with simply a thought. But does that make her evil? Throughout the series, Mara uncovers the origins of her power from her past and finds friends who have unique abilities of their own. Together, they grapple with their moral beliefs of what is good and what is bad, and where they fall in-between.
One of the main themes in the books is false perceptions. There are many points where Mara sees things that aren’t really there, does things without any memory of it later, and has flashbacks that aren’t her own. In order to achieve this look, typography was printed out and placed under a large Tupperware container filled with water. Recording a slow-motion video, the container was shaken to create ripples, adding ink in some instances to see how it would interact with the letters.
